The Parish of St. Paul, Oldham
Sunday School
Sunday School runs at the same time as the main 10 am service on a Sunday Morning during term time, except when there is a Parade Service (usually the first Sunday of the Month), and during School Holidays and Half-Terms, where all ages are encouraged to be in church.
At St. Paul's we strive to provide a range of activities for your child when they are in church. We particularly focus on introducing children to the Christian Faith through Art, Drama, Games and other practical activities. We are aware that every child is different and has different needs. We hope that there will be something here appropriate for your child.
There are a number of different groups to cover the different ages.
If your child would prefer to remain in church, they can choose books from the lending library to read during church services (second window sill on the left). Worksheets are also available, and paper for drawing (first window sill on the left). What we offer for different age groups
Children 1 year old and under
Most children at this age, whether babies or toddlers, are happy staying with their parents in church. Soft toys are available at the back. If your child becomes unsettled, please feel free to take them into the Community Room where Sunday School takes place. You can also find baby changing facilities there.
While the church tries to provide a safe environment for your child, at this age you are responsible for your child's safety at all times.
Children who are not yet attending School
Activities are available in the Sunday School Room, where children must be accompanied by their parents. Often Art activities are available.
Quiet toys for toddlers are available in Sunday School, and at the back of church.
Many parents dip in and out, staying in church while the children are settled, and bringing them into Sunday School should they become restless, and then taking them back into church.
While the church tries to provide a safe environment for your child, at this age, you are responsible for your child's safety at all times.
Children of Primary School Age (Nursery - Year 6)
Children will work on faith-based activities appropriate to their age, tying in with the Church Year.
Children will be invited to read at the Parade Service, and present material that they have been working on to the congregation.
Children at this age do not need to be accompanied by parents in Sunday School. But a consent form will need to have been completed or renewed, every year.
Many also enjoy serving at the altar, and/or singing in the choir.
Children of Secondary School Age
Young People work on a range of different activities that they choose.
- Some will enjoy helping lead the younger groups.
- Some will enjoy research projects.
- Some will enjoy taking part in the church service.
They will sometimes be invited to read at the Parade Service, or to join the Reading Rota. They may also present material that they have been working on.
Young People at this age do not need to be accompanied by parents in Sunday School. But a consent form will need to have been completed or renewed, every year.
Many also enjoy carrying the cross, and/or singing in the choir.
We hope that the young people will begin to contribute to the life of the church.
Admission to Holy Communion
Children from church-attending families, who are felt to be ready, are aged seven or over, and who have been baptised are welcome to attend a course all about Holy Communion, before they start receiving it for themselves.
