Deputy Warden's Duties

Before the service:

  1. Please arrive at 9:30 am.
  2. In the Vestry, please:
    1. use the “fish key” in the top RH desk draw drawer to deactivate the front door magnetic lock (when it is in operation).
    2. make sure the sound system is switched on at the plug sockets and working.
    3. take the collection plates and put them out: one in the Choir Vestry, one in Sunday School; and two (more if a large congregation) on the table at the back with the large plate.
  3. When there is no Sunday School, ensure tables and chairs are put out in the Community Room.
  4. Ensure the A4 reading sheet is on the lectern for the readers.
  5. Ensure that the Paschal Candle is lit, except during Lent. N.B. Normally it is next to the table at the back but during Easter Season it is at the front in the middle of the Chancel.
  6. Check the rotas to ensure that people have arrived for their duties: Sacristans, Eucharistic Assistants, Sidespeople, Coffee, Readers, Crucifer etc.
  7. Arrange people to take up the bread and wine; and to offer the Collection Plate to the congregation.

During the service

  1. Be vigilant! Please keep a discreet eye on any possible troublemakers!
  2. If the weather is warm, please leave the front door open on the hook, and also leave the blue doors open, to let air circulate!
  3. Ensure a Sidesperson is available at the back with enough “packs”, to make sure those coming in late have what they need.
  4. Check that parents with young children know (a) about Sunday School; (b) that there are some books and drawing materials for children in the North side-aisle; and (c) that there are toys at the back, only for those too young for Sunday School.
  5. Count the attendance in church before Sunday School come in: (a) adults and (b) those under 16.
  6. When the intercessions start, tell Sunday School to begin getting ready to come into church; obtain a figure for Sunday School attendance: (a) adults and (b) those under 16.
  7. For the Bread & Wine (Gifts) and Collection (Offertory):
    1. those taking up the gifts and those receiving the collection: start moving up the centre aisle on the first sung note of the Offertory Hymn;
    2. those receiving the Collection: begin at the front, work their way to the back, then take it all up to the sanctuary on the large plate;
    3. the gifts and the Collection: should be received by the Crucifer. “Please wait for a nod from the president before leaving the sanctuary.”

After the service

  1. Open the door out of church during the final hymn.
  2. Please encourage the sidespeople, uniformed organisations, or children to collect up all the service books, including from the choir stalls, especially if it is a last day with a particular order of service.
  3. In the Vestry, please:
    1. report the total people present: (i) adults and (ii) those under 16.
    2. switch off the sound system at the plug sockets; unless there is a baptism at 11:45.
    3. use the “fish key” in the top RH desk draw drawer to re-activate the front door magnetic lock, unless there is a baptism.
  4. Find someone to help count the money, and do so, filling in the Cash Sheet.
  5. Take all service sheets and service books back to the rear window of the church.
